Local Student Competitions

The Student Division of FMMC holds three annual instrumental competitions for high school students and an annual voice competition for high school and college students ages 17–22.

Winners receive cash awards, one year’s free membership in the Club, and are invited to appear in the FMMC Student Recital Series. Winners of Honorable Mentions also receive a year’s free membership.

Piano   Strings   Voice   Woodwind, Brass & Percussion

High School Competition for Strings

The FMMC High School Competition for Strings in memory of Gustave E. Johansen, Jr., usually takes places in mid-November at the National Presbyterian Church. This year the competition will be entirely virtual due to the Coronavirus Pandemic. Applications and Entries are due at the beginning of November.

Sue Goetz Ross Student Competition for Voice

The FMMC Voice Competition for voice students ages 17 to 22, in honor of Sue Goetz Ross, takes place in early March at the Bethesda Presbyterian Church. Applications are due in late February.

Ross-Roberts Competition for High School Woodwind, Brass, and Percussion Players

The FMMC High School Woodwind, Brass, and Percussion competition takes place in late March at the Lutheran Church of the Reformation in Washington, DC. Applications are due in late February.

Stubbs-Henbest-Davis High School Piano Competition

The FMMC High School Piano Competition, in memory of Pearl Pate Stubbs, Fanny Ross Henbest, and Audrey Davis, takes place in early April at the Steinway Piano Gallery. Applications are due in early March.
