You can do both by donating long-term appreciated securities, including stock, bonds, and mutual funds, directly to FMMC. Compared with selling your appreciated securities and contributing the after-tax proceeds, you may be able to automatically increase your gift and your tax deduction by transferring ownership of long-term holdings directly to FMMC. Doing this guarantees that you receive a charitable deduction for those holdings that is for their full market value and you are not subject to the capital gains tax (subject to IRS deduction limits).
