Eligibility
- Applicants must not be under professional management.
- Applicants must be neither younger than 18 nor older than 28 as of May 24, 2008 (proof of age, please).
- First prize winners of this competition in past years may not apply.
Repertoire Requirements
Applicants will submit the following:
- A list of repertoire for solo piano totaling 120 minutes. The repertoire should include complete works in a variety of styles and periods. In the Semi-Final and Final rounds, contestants will perform works selected by the judges from this list.
- A CD of 50-60 minutes of repertoire representing at least three styles and periods selected from the repertoire listed in #1.
Single movements from multi-movement compositions are acceptable on the CD. The CD audition constitutes the Preliminary round.
- A listing of the repertoire recorded on the CD.
Regulations and Instructions
- Once an application has been submitted, no changes in repertoire will be permitted.
- The preliminary jury will review the CDs to select the semifinalists. All applicants will be notified in the middle of April.
- Semifinalists selected after the CD auditions will compete in Washington, DC on Saturday, May 24, 2008 at The Catholic University of America.
- Applicants should be prepared to play all repertoire upon request for the semifinal round.
- Finalists selected after the semifinal round will compete on Sunday, May 25, 2008 in the Terrace Theater of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts.
General Information
- Use the online application. Fill it in on line. Hand written applications are not accepted.
- All forms and CD should be sent in one package postmarked no later than March 20, 2008. Mail arriving after March 27th will not be accepted. NOTE: Overseas mail may take two weeks.
- Mail to assistant competition chairman: Eleanor C. Woods, 5456 Nebraska Ave. NW, Washington, DC 20015-1350
- The application should include:
- Completed application form with your signature and that of your teacher/coach.
- A list of your complete repertoire (from the application form) totaling 120 minutes.
- A list of recorded repertoire on the CD (from the application form). Do not put your name on this list or on the CD.
- CD of the selected repertoire, 50-60 minutes total, omit long repeats and applause. CD should be playable on a standard CD player.
- On the CD cover, identify the tracks with exact selection, movement, etc.
- Non refundable fee of $75 in US dollars drawn on a US Bank. Checks or Money Orders in US Dollars should be made payable to Friday Morning Music Club Foundation.
- Copy of birth certificate or other official document giving proof of age.
- A list of your Education and Experience such as music schools attended, major teachers, scholarships, awards and important public appearances.
- A detailed statement describing your commitment to serving the cultural community and how your use of prize money would strengthen this commitment.
The Washington International Competition seeks to support outstanding young
artists of the highest caliber who are creating and embracing new performance
opportunities in an effort to develop audience attendance, interest,
participation and support.
A departure from traditional competitions, this competition
aspires to benefit the community as well as the performing artist.
- If the application package has omissions or incorrect information it will be disqualified.
- The FMMC Foundation assumes no responsibility for actions of the applicants or escorts or injuries sustained by them during the applicants' stay in the Washington area and assumes no responsibility in connection with the applicants' participation in the Competition.
- Decisions of the judges are final. Awards may be withheld at the discretion of the judges.
