MEMBER NEWS PUBLISHED ON THIS WEBSITE IN MARCH 2003:
- FMMC member Joseph Holt will make his conducting debut with The Choral Arts Society of Washington with the Misa Criolla by Ariel Ramirez.Ý There will be two performances of this concert - Friday, March 14 at National Presbyterian Church and Sunday, March 16 at the Rachel M. Schlesinger Concert Hall. Also on the program will be Mozart's Grand Mass in C Minor, conducted by Norman Scribner.Ý Please call the Choral Arts box office at 202-244-3669 or visit the website www.choralarts.org for further information.
- Columbia Flute Choir, conducted by Sharyn Byer, will present a Benefit Concert for the humanitarian aid organization CrossLink International on Saturday March 8, 2003, at 7:00pm at Columbia Baptist Church, 103 West Columbia Street, Falls Church, Virginia, featuring special guest soloist Carole Bean of the National Symphony Orchestra. Also on the program is the world premiere of "World in Synchronicity" by FMMC composer Melvin Lauf, Jr. Other FFMC members in Columbia Flute Choir include Toby Rotman,ÝMichael Bowyer and Steve Tung. - The current Washingtonian magazine has an article about Sylvia Alimena that mentions the FMMC Orchestra, and the March 2nd orchestra concert. There is also a great spotlight article about Frank Conlon.
- Associate Pianists' Chair Honored
Herbert B. Bain, Honorary member, has held several elected positions in the club, chaired many committees and performed a great number of volunteer services, including hundreds of performances in retirement homes through the Outreach Program. He has just signaled his own personal retirement from his longest held position, that of Chairman of the Associate Pianists.
Herb joined the Associate Pianists in 1980 and became the Group's Chairman for the 1986-87 term and was again elected for the 1988-89 term. He has been reelected every term since then and so completed 15 years as Chairman by the end of 2002. He has been designated Chairman Emeritus of the Associate Pianists and intends to continue to attend as many meetings as possible as a guest. In addition to the Emeritus designation, the group contributed a gift of $500.00 to the Club in Herb's honor.
STUDENT MEMBER NEWS:
- Violist Diana Wade, student of Helen Fall, was accepted to the National High School Honors Orchestra. Only 16 violists nationwide were accepted to this elite orchestra. The NHSHO will perform at the American String Teachers Association Conference in Columbus, OH in March. Diana was accepted by audition as a student member of FMMC in January.
