UPCOMING PERFORMANCES:

  • October 4: Anna Ouspenskaya announces the first of a series of recitals by Trio Moskva in homage to the 175th anniversary of Beethoven's death. On the program are Beethoven's Piano Trios Op.1, No.3, Op. 44, and Op. 97. This concert will take place at the Corcoran Gallery of Art.
     
  • October 5, Orchestral debut of Lori Laitman's Echo and The Ballad Singer, in New Haven by Orchestra New England, conducted by James Sinclair with baritone Anton Below as soloist. Later in the month, Laitman heads to Nebraska for the premiere of a song cycle commissioned by the Nebraska MTA, entitled Within these Spaces, for soprano and piano.
     
  • October 27, 4:00 pm, Hirshhorn Museum:  Victoria Bragin, first-prize co-winner of the 2002 Van Cliburn International Piano Competition for Outstanding Amateurs, will be presented by the Smithsonian Associates in a program consisting of works by Haydn, Debussy, Bartók, and Chopin.   • November 8, 7:30 pm: Elizabeth Miller will present an Organ Recital on the new Casavant Organ at Aldergate United Methodist Church, Fort Hunt and Collingwood Roads in Alexandria. The program will include works by Bach, Mendelssohn, Vierne, Dupré and Mozart.
     
  • Gabrieli and the Glories of Venice. The Washington Symphonic Brass performing music of Andrea and Giovanni Gabrieli, Monteverdi, among others. With William Neil, organ.

PAST PERFORMANCES AND OTHER NEWS:

  • David Chapman, voice teacher/pianist, spent five weeks in Shanghai, China giving voice master classes at the East China Pedagogical University, the Shanghai Music Conservatory, and the Shanghai Opera House. A concert was presented at the Grande Theater, in which Chapman accompanied all the soloists. The program consisted mainly of operatic arias, duets, and ensemble scenes. Because of the success of this tour, the Opera House has agreed to sponsor Chapman again next year.
     
  • An Evening with Louise Kupelian, a jazz concert, was presented on August 30 at Borders Book Store at White Flint Mall in Bethesda. Following the concert, she signed the recently released CD of many of her FMMC performances over the years. Contact her to purchase this recording of her classical works.
     
  • In July 2002, Lori Laitman's Dickinson Songs were featured at the Emily Dickinson International Society Meeting in Amherst, MA. In August 2002, Laitman was a guest artist at The Grandin Festival in Cincinnati, Ohio. She spent a week coaching the student in preparation for a concert of her vocal chamber music on August 22.
     
  • Joselyn Makowski and James Litzelman are featured guest columnists in the Fall 2002 Keyboard Companion magazine, a national pedagogical publication. Litzelman's article deals with teaching the Romantic style, while Makowski's is directed to adjusting technical requirements for pianists with small hands.
     
  • The recent American Liszt Society Festival held at the Catholic University of America, The Kennedy Center, and the Library of Congress included performances by FMMC members Marilyn Neeley, Ann Schein, Rosanne Conway, James Litzelman, Joselyn Makowski, Raymond Jackson, Anna Ouspenskaya, and Edward Newman. Thomas Mastroianni, the ALS President, directed the three-day festival.
